The pelvic floor helps to maintain our faecal continence. But it also needs to be able to relax to allow to pass stool through. If your pelvic floor isn’t working optimally it can lead to symptoms of constipation, urgency, incontinence and pain.

The pelvic floor can play a role in the following symptoms:

However, you can also have what is called slow transit constipation, where you are still emptying every day but the time it takes for food to appear in your stool is slow. This can lead to other issues such as IBS.

Faecal Urgency: is a strong desire to empty that is difficult to defer, making us need to rush to the bathroom to fear of leaking

Anal Incontinence: Loss of wind or stool

Proctalgia Fugax: This is a sudden onset of severe pain into the rectum associated with spasm of the pelvic floor and or anal sphincters. The pain is often experiences as a stabbing pain into the rectum and can last for seconds or minutes.
