Gynaecological Cancers
Gynaecological Cancer Support
Patients following the treatment of gynaecological cancers often experience urinary incontinence as well as pelvic pain and painful sex.
However, it isn’t something that is often spoken about during or after treatment with our healthcare practitioners.
Pelvic health physiotherapy has been shown to be helpful in the treatment of pelvic floor conditions. There may be some ceiling depending on the type of treatment you have had. However, optimising what you can, can help to improve symptoms.
What to expect at your initial appointment?
Before Surgery:
A thorough assessment of your bladder, bowel and sexual function. As well as your general health, exercise levels and past medical history.
Education about the pelvic floor and good bladder and bowel habits
We will likely assess your pelvic floor and provide a tailored program for you
We may also prescribe a general strength program to help strengthen your body before surgery or treatment
After Surgery:
Starting you on a tailored pelvic floor and general strength program
General progression back to activity and doing what you love
So why should I see a physiotherapist?
Not to use the common cliche but we really want you to not just survive but thrive. Survivorship after cancer is improving which is amazing. But we often have to deal with the side effects of treatment which can have a huge impact on our quality of life.
When should I review with a physiotherapist?
Ideally we review prior to your surgery to address any underlying issues prior to surgery.
